Professor Helen Reddel is Director of the Australian Centre for Airways disease Monitoring (ACAM), Research Leader of the Clinical Management Group at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, Macquarie University, and a respiratory physician at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. Professor Reddel has led major evidence-based changes in asthma management, with a strong focus on making guidelines not only evidence-based, but also patient-centred and practical. She is Co-Chair of the large multinational NOVELTY study, investigating clinical trajectories and underlying mechanisms in patients with diagnoses of asthma and/or COPD. Her current research also includes population monitoring of asthma and COPD, development of new diagnosis-agnostic assessment tools for obstructive lung disease, clinical studies investigating diagnosis and management of airways disease, and qualitative research about patient perspectives in mild and severe asthma. She is Chair of the Science Committee of the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), which in recent years has emphasised evidence-based patient-centred asthma management strategies that improve patient outcomes, reduce overuse of short-acting beta2-agonists and oral corticosteroids, and reduce the carbon footprint of asthma care.

Professor John Blakey is joint senior author of the TSANZ position paper on the environmental impact of inhaled medicines. He developed his expertise in airways disease in centres of excellence in the UK before moving to Australia. John is currently the Head of Department of Respiratory Medicine and lead for Airways diseases at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth. He acts as the medical advisor for Asthma Australia and has a keen interest in improving services and education which is also reflected in his work with the Future of Asthma project. He has a record of research publications in high impact journals and has current research funded by NHMRC, WA government, charities and industry. John is on the steering committee of the CURE Asthma project, and international trials. His academic affiliations are to Curtin University, the University of Western Australia and the Institute for Respiratory Health.

David Pencheon is a UK trained doctor and was the founder Director of the Sustainable Development Unit [SDU]* for NHS England and Public Health England, established in 2007 – which has now grown intro the Greener NHS. He is now an Honorary Professor and an Associate at the Medical and Health School at the University of Exeter, UK, and an Honorary Senior Fellow in the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He is also a Commissioner on the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission. He has held appointments at University College London (UCL), and is a visiting Professor at the Centre for Environment and Sustainability (CES) at the University of Surrey, and an Adjunct Professor at Monash University in Melbourne. and at Notre Dame University in Sydney.

Associate Professor Peter Franklin is an environmental and occupational epidemiologist at the School of Population and Global Health (SPGH), University of Western Australia (UWA), with research interests in mining exposures and disease (including respiratory disease and cancers), the health effects of air pollution (indoorand outdoor), and early life environmental exposures and children’s health. He is Director of the Occupational Respiratory Epidemiology research group at SPGH.
