Professor Helen Reddel is Director of the Australian Centre for Airways disease Monitoring (ACAM), Research Leader of the Clinical Management Group at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, Macquarie University, and a respiratory physician at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. Professor Reddel has led major evidence-based changes in asthma management, with a strong focus on making guidelines not only evidence-based, but also patient-centred and practical. She is Co-Chair of the large multinational NOVELTY study, investigating clinical trajectories and underlying mechanisms in patients with diagnoses of asthma and/or COPD. Her current research also includes population monitoring of asthma and COPD, development of new diagnosis-agnostic assessment tools for obstructive lung disease, clinical studies investigating diagnosis and management of airways disease, and qualitative research about patient perspectives in mild and severe asthma. She is Chair of the Science Committee of the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), which in recent years has emphasised evidence-based patient-centred asthma management strategies that improve patient outcomes, reduce overuse of short-acting beta2-agonists and oral corticosteroids, and reduce the carbon footprint of asthma care.

Mark Hew is head of Allergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology at the Alfred Hospital, and Clinical Professor at Monash University, in Melbourne, Australia. After qualifying from Melbourne in 1995, Mark undertook specialist training in Wellington & Melbourne, a severe asthma fellowship at the Brompton, immunology research at Imperial College (PhD), and epidemiological training at Oxford (MScEBHC). He holds dual Australian specialist registration in Respiratory & Sleep Medicine and Allergy & Clinical Immunology. At the Alfred, Mark has established specialised programs for severe asthma, inducible laryngeal obstruction, and difficult anaphylaxis. Mark’s research spans NHMRC-funded mechanistic studies of allergic disease, randomised trials, population-based studies, and research translation. He has published eight book chapters and 160 peer-reviewed papers, mentored ten allergy fellows, and supervised eight PhD candidates. He serves on the editorial board of Allergy, the core committee of the ERS ‘CONNECT’ Clinical Research.

Dr Shanthikumar is a Paediatric Respiratory specialist and Clinician Scientist Fellow at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. He has expertise in childhood asthma. He is the clinical lead of the Complex Asthma Service at RCH, and serves as clinical lead for a Safercare Victoria project which aims to improve asthma care across seven health services in Melbourne’s North West. He has published asthma related research spanning laboratory based endotyping, asthma prevalence, lung function assessment, inhaler device choice, and trends in asthma outcomes and quality of care. He also authored the Paediatric Improvement Collaborative’s guidelines on preschool and adolescent asthma. He is a national leader in childhood asthma as evidenced by his involvement in lobbying the federal government to reverse its decision to stop funding inhaled corticosteroids for preschool children with asthma and contributing to an upcoming report commissioned by the Federal government on optimising asthma care in the context of minimising environmental footprint. Dr Shanthikumar also undertakes extensive education in childhood asthma, which is directed at both consumers and clinicians, which has spanned lectures, webinars, online education packages, and podcasts.

Dr Amy Chan is Associate Professor and Respiratory lead of the Medicines Intelligence group at the School of Pharmacy, University of Auckland. She is a clinical pharmacist with over 15 years’ experience working in hospital, where she led one of the clinical pharmacy teams. Amy holds an honorary post with University College London, UK, where she completed her postdoctoral fellowship training. She now leads a research group that explores the intersection between digital technology, big data and respiratory health, with a focus on asthma outcomes. She is currently leading one of the working groups for the European Respiratory Society Clinical Research Collaboration CONNECT which focuses on digital respiratory healthcare, and is a global lead for workforce transformation with the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). Amy has over 100 peer-reviewed research outputs including 12 book chapters and one co-edited book. She has received over 50 research grants and has influenced respiratory policy at a national and international level including the Global asthma guidelines, WHO guidelines and civil society policies. Amy is also a Minister-appointed councillor for the Pharmacy Council New Zealand, member of the Respiratory Effectiveness Group, Open Digital Health, PSA Respiratory Taskforce and ESPACOMP Research Policy and Implementation group. She is an associate editor for 3 journals and sits on the Scientific Advisory Board for the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ and Medical committee for the Auckland Medical Research Foundation.

Peter Gibson is a respiratory physician, clinical researcher and lead of the severe asthma service at John Hunter Hospital. Peter and his team at Hunter Medical Research Institute have been instrumental in developing the Treatable Traits model of care for airways diseases; Peter is a Chief Investigator for the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Centre of Excellence in Asthma Treatable Traits and leads the Australasian severe asthma registry. Professor Gibson’s internationally recognised innovative research includes inflammatory subtypes of asthma and cough; airway biomarkers; neurogenic mechanisms and laryngeal dysfunction in chronic cough; and multidimensional assessment and management of complex airway disorders. He has been awarded several research honours, including the 2018 ERS Gold Medal in Asthma.
