Dr Bristi Roy is a Consultant Respiratory & Sleep Medicine Physician and Interventional Pulmonologist. She is a Staff Specialist at Westmead Hospital. She completed her Pleural Fellowship at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Western Australia and is the Pleural Medicine Lead at Westmead Hospital. She is passionate about pleural research and improving the lives of those with pleural diseases.

Professor Y C Gary Lee is a Professor of Respiratory Medicine at UWA and a consultant chest physician at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital where he set up and directs Australia’s first centralized hospital pleural service. He is a world leader in pleural research and heads a translational research group at the Institute for Respiratory Health. His pleural program uniquely integrates clinical, lab and allied health research arms with his clinical pleural service. His has led several high-profile investigator-led multicentre randomized trials. He has an H-index of 64 (total citations 13000+) from 300 publications including 10+ papers in the New Engl J Med, JAMA and Lancet journals. His publications have been included in 12+ international guidelines directly impacting global practice. Professor Lee was the recipient of the Research Medal of the Thoracic Society of Australia & NZ in 2021 and the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology Research Medal in 2016 and was named the Cancer Council WA Researcher of the Year in 2019. He has won successive NHMRC/MRFF Fellowships and has been an invited speaker in more than 100 conferences in 32 countries.

Dr George is a Staff Specialist in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at the John Hunter, Newcastle and a member of HMRI’s Asthma and Breathing Group. He recently completed a two-year fellowship with the Oxford Pleural Unit and is a doctoral candidate with the University of Newcastle. His research focuses on enhancing safety and quality in pleural intervention. He is the Australian lead for PROSPECT, a large-scale observational trial of pleural procedure outcome, and is leading the STREAMLINE feasibility RCT, which examines a novel diagnostic pathway in MPE. He is a member of the ERS Taskforce on Benign Pleural Effusions, and TSANZ’s working group on pleural procedure competency.

Dr Sanjeevan Muruganandan trained at the Western and Austin Hospitals and qualified as a respiratory and sleep physician (FRACP). He then moved to Perth where he did a fellowship with Prof. Martin Phillips, Dr Rajesh Thomas and Prof. Gary Lee at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Dr Muruganandan obtained a PhD on malignant pleural diseases with Prof. Gary Lee. His research was awarded a NHMRC scholarship. He is one of a few respiratory physicians with extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of pleural diseases. His work is recognised both nationally and internationally. Dr Muruganandan has established the pleural medicine unit at The Northern Hospital. This is the only unit of its kind in Victoria. The unit admits and manages patients with all pleural diseases including pleural complications of terminal lung cancer. Dr Muruganandan is the director of the pleural services at The Northern Hospital. He also leads some of the world class cutting-edge research into pleural diseases and his research is published in some of the most prominent medical journals.

Dr Nicola Smith is a Respiratory Physician with over 10 years experience in researching and managing pleural diseases. She leads the Wellington regional pleural service providing ambulatory care to patients with a wide range of pleural diseases. Dr Smith has been instrumental in developing Pleural Medicine as a sub-speciality in Australasia through lectures, the development of the TSANZ ultrasound competency guidelines, and convening pleural procedures and thoracic ultrasound courses.
